Zowel Kythira als Antikythira behoren tot de Eptanissa eilandengroep (dit betekent letterlijk "zeven eilanden" met Korfoe, Lefkas, Ithaka, Kefalonia, Zakynthos). Antikythira lijkt meer een rots in zee. De inwoners van dit eiland zijn over het algemeen nakomelingen van vluchtelingen uit Kreta uit de tijd dat dit eiland bezet werd door de Turken.
